PRF treatment in Dentistry

What is PRF treatment, what are growth factors, what is the most common use of PRF in Dentistry, PRF and anti-age, why you should know more about this treatment…all here, on our blog!

What does PRF mean?
PRF is abbreviation from “platelet-rich-fibrin” or “platelet-rich-plasma”.

What is PRF?
PRF is obtained by centrifuge of patient’s blood in a test tube without additives. PRF is clean and final product containing exclusively fibrin from the patient’s blood and it is primary used in oral and aesthetic surgery. From recently, in advanced dental interventions, fibrin is used because of better healing process of the bone and soft tissues, so it represents an ideal preparation for surgical interventions which precede implant insertion.

What is it about?
As we all know, our body has a natural capability of self-healing and often we can help ourselves in the best way possible. In this case, it is about tissue regeneration thanks to the own blood which, after the centrifuge, is enriched with plasma and fibrin to be applied as personal cure for certain conditions. With PRF treatment throughout stem cells attraction new tissues are regenerated. The process starts with a blood draw which is later divided throughout coagulation centrifuge. The entire process is really fast (about 15 minutes), painless and simple. Above all, it is absolutely safe. Separating blood from red blood cell we get plasma and fibrin that we use in further process as biological autotransplantation, meaning that, after the tooth extraction, we insert plasma and fibrin on the place of the extraction in order to speed up a process of healing and, as consequence, the process of implant acceptance.

How do we get PRF?
The method starts with drawing certain amount of the venous blood from the patient. Under specific parameters of time, speed and rotation angle, we get a fibrin concentrate (Advanced PRF) or blood plasma (Injectable PRF) enriched with platelets and white blood cells.
In both of these products a high concentration of the growth factor is present (ten times more than in earlier products such as CGF, PRP…) which is the most deserving for putting in motion a complex mechanism of wound healing. Blood platelets present in PRF are rich with growth factors. During the activation, growth factors go out from blood platelets and stimulate the process of angiogenesis (creation of new blood vessels) as well as production of new bone within bone defect. As a consequence, the defect becomes richer with blood, so regeneration is improved. Growth factors have a positive impact on bone growth in defect in periodontal interventions which improves the effect of therapy itself. Results are really extraordinary.

How does PRF work?
PRF enhances wound healing processes in many ways. In platelets there are growth factors that stimulate the healing of damaged tissues, have positive impact on collagen and new blood vessels production. They have been recognized long time ago as modulators of cellular growth and development, generators of reproduction, matrix synthesys and cellular transformation.

The most frequent use of PRF in Dentistry:
Augmentation of alveolar bone (preparation for implant insertion)
Sinus-lift
Periodontal interventions (periodontal flap surgery)
Therapy of gums recession (gums retraction) where PRF membrane is adopted to cover exposed tooth neck and eliminate defects.
Tooth extraction- PRF is inserted in defect to reduce the bone substance loss.

Is the method PRF safe?
The PRF method is absolutely safe since it involves only a personal patient’s blood which is broth back into the defect without any other additive.

PRF and Anti-age
We already saw that PRF method in dentistry is majorly used for better and faster healing of the bone structure and soft tissues. However, beside the oral surgery, PRF method is recommended in dermatology too, in mesotherapy, because it is well known that plasma is great natural filler. This method is also known as “Injectable PRF”. PRF in different form is used for face rejuvenation and hair loss therapy. Texture and skin quality are improved, circles around eyes becomes less visible and wrinkles are significantly diminished.

The history of PRF
The PRF method has been developed at the beginning of 21th century by Dr. Joseph Choukroun, French cardio surgeon and anesthesiologist and know, after a decade of researches and clinical applications we have a second generation of the product “Advanced PRF” and “Injectable PRF”. Our dental studio “Aponia Dental Center” proudly emphasizes that the great professor himself held a course of PRF method for our team.

Advanced PRF
Advanced PRF has become practically inevitable phase in implant insertion and oral surgery. With a help of a centrifuge, we get to have a fibrin complex concentrate which, in form of autotransplant, is placed in surgical region which furtherly activates grow factor going out from platelets and white blood cells strongly stimulating creation of new blood vessels and capillaries. This way, accelerated regenation takes place along with the grow of new bone formation. Simultaneously, integration of implants is faster, which makes implant placement more successful and secure. Fibrin concentrate can be meccanicly treated in different ways so it an be used as resorptive membrane which fulfills the wound after tooth extraction, supplement or matrix to the artificial bone that gives an additional stability.

Who is candidate for PRF treatment?
There is no special limit for the use of PRF, practically every person with normal health condition can be candidate for this procedure.
In our every day practice we suggest PRF method to all those patients who plan to get implants, in some cases it is even necessary given tha fact that resolves some classical issues in a revolutionary way.
Also, various other procedures in periodontal surgery give better results if PRF and classical approach are combined. Even more simple, routine interventions like tooth extraction have less potential complications, which gives us clear message that PRF method is truly revolutionary achievement of modern dentistry.
